The best thing about the Canon EOS Rebel T3i is that you get some features, like the tilt and swivel LCD monitor, that are generally only available on the higher end models. It allows you to get professional features at entry level prices. For this reason, the T3i is considered an upper entry-level choice.
If this is your first foray into DSLRs, you should know that there is a bit of a learning curve when coming from a point and shoot digital camera. I got my first DSLR only a week before a big trip to Hawaii and I still did not know how to fully use it when I got there. When I upgraded to the T3i, I was able to start using it immediately.

Image quality between the T2i and T3i are exactly the same. Due to the different LCD screen, the T3i is slightly heavier than the T2i. Both cameras use the same battery, so there is no improvement in battery life with the T3i.
